Advanced Sustainable Biofuels Production from Purified Microalgae and Oleaginous Yeasts via Integrated Solar Hydrothermal Liquefaction
Accelerating the EU's Renewable Energy Transition
The European Union’s transition to renewable energy sources is set to accelerate under the EU Green Deal. The urgency for this transition has been further underscored by the REPowerEU plan, which aims to increase the 2030 renewable energy target to 45%, up from the previous 40%. The ongoing energy crisis has highlighted the need to diversify energy sources, both regionally and internationally, with the EU taking a leading role.
One of the key challenges remains the integration of renewable energy into the transportation sector, which accounted for 29.2% of the EU’s total energy consumption in 2021. Biofuels, derived from biomass, offer a promising solution. These fuels can replace fossil fuels while using existing infrastructure for transportation and storage, reducing the need for costly investments in new engines and tanks. This makes biofuels a cost-effective and viable alternative, helping to drive the green transition forward while reducing dependency on conventional energy sources.
Advanced Sustainable Biofuel Production
SUNFUSION introduces an innovative approach to converting microalgae and oleaginous yeasts into high energy, sustainable shipping and aviation fuels by enhancing state-of-the-art technologies. SUNFUSION solution lies on four core pillars:
Advanced photobioreactors and open raceway ponds for the cultivation and purification of microalgae and oleaginous yeasts
A continuously operating Hydrothermal Liquefaction reactor powered by Concentrated Solar Thermal energy
Solar-assisted Thermal Energy Storage systems
Hydrotreatment units for producing sustainable aviation fuels and marine fuels, along with research on future solar integration
SUNFUSION aims to achieve a solar-to-biocrude energy conversion efficiency of over 50%.
All key components of SUNFUSION process are mounted on a mobile platform, allowing for off-grid operation and flexible biomass treatment.
