Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) stands as the largest academic institution in Greece, covering all scientific and technological fields. In the SUNFUSION Project, AUTH is represented by the Laboratory of Biochemical and Biotechnological Processes (LB²P), part of the Department of Chemical Engineering, headed by Associate Professor Ch. Chatzidoukas. The mission of this lab is to conduct pioneering research with focus on advancing chemical and biochemical processes, biorefining for biomass waste valorisation, microorganism cultivation (including microalgae, bacteria, and yeast), and the production of innovative bioproducts such as biopolymers and biochemicals. In the project, AUTH will leverage its expertise microbial processes, biomass valorisation, and dynamic modelling and optimization of chemical and biochemical reactors to develop and standardize optimal microalgae cultivation methods in lab- and semi-pilot scale units, integrating them with heterotrophic yeast cultures.
