FUELGAE

FuelGae Sustainable On-site and Innovative Technologies for Advanced Transport BioFuels from MιcroalGae

To meet the EU’s carbon neutrality goals, innovative solutions are needed to decarbonise hard-to-electrify sectors such as aviation and shipping. The EU-funded FUELGAE project is developing an integrated approach to capture CO₂ emissions from biorefineries and energy-intensive industries using microalgae, which are then converted into Advanced Liquid Fuels (ALFs).

In the FUELGAE project, novel multidisciplinary technologies will be developed based on the capture of CO₂ by microalgae, studies on the evolutionary adaptation of microalgae, advanced biomass treatments to extract lipids and sugars, and the creation of high-efficiency multifunctional catalysts to produce biofuels. These technologies will be scaled up over the course of the project with the aim of future commercialization.

Coordinated by CSIC, the FUELGAE consortium includes partners from Austria, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Italy, and Spain.
